Reading

Just finished re-reading Sheila Heti’s How Should a Person Be? and guess what? Sixteen years after first reading it, I’m still not sure how I, or any other person, should be. So… that’s disappointing. But it was a great re-read, and much more salacious than I remembered. Maybe I’m just old now, but it was a thrill.

Barbara Kingsolver’s new book, Partita, just came out last week, so that’s up next.

Someday I’ll get a Baa book club going. I keep saying I will, but… will I? Maybe this winter.

Watching

East of Eden. Wow. Speaking of book clubs, I was once in one that assigned East of Eden. It was TOO long and hard for me, so I never finished it, which I now regret. Turns out no one else read it either, so instead of discussing it, we watched the original movie. All I remember is James Dean throwing himself on fences and being a big baby. Needless to say, this version is markedly better, though Cal really could have done a BIT more fence sobbing, in my opinion.

Fun fact: the kid who plays Aron in the new East of Eden is Kate Winslet’s son. So… that’s something.

I’m also planning to see the new Sense and Sensibility, because it’s our co-founder Nicole’s birthday wish to see it this weekend with a bunch of ladies. I doubt it will live up to the 1995 masterpiece starring Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson, but I’m going in with an open mind (and heart)

Listening

Liv, one of our Baa team members, got me onto the Numero Group playlists on Spotify, and there are some real gems. I highly recommend these curated lists, especially the oldies on Numero Group’s Guide to Strip Club Shakers. The tagline: “Back in the day there were no jazz players worth their salt who never moonlit a strip joint. To celebrate these noble nighthawks, here are our favorite brass-backed burlesque bump-and-grinders.” Pretty fun!

Wearing

Trying to wear my many favourite sweaters and cute fall jackets, but these random hot days are really cramping my style.

Looking forward to

All of the above. I can’t wait to read books, watch movies and wear my sweaters as the light starts to fade. I also want to start painting and drawing again. We’ll see!
