Similar to Pysanky, Driapanky are a form of Ukrainian decorated Easter eggs. A Driapanka is created by dyeing an egg a single colour and then gently scratching away the surface to reveal the white shell beneath. Designs can range from simple geometric patterns to detailed illustrations inspired by nature, often imbued with symbols of protection and goodwill. It’s a beautiful technique for those who enjoy drawing and working with their hands.
In this workshop, artist and teacher Oksana Hawrylak will introduce you to the Driapanky process using naturally dyed eggs. Together, we’ll explore the rich history of Ukrainian decorated eggs, review the tools used for scratching, study a variety of design approaches and motifs, and learn how to protect your Driapanka without emptying or lacquering the egg.
Please note: Sharp tools will be used. This workshop is not suitable for children.
All materials will be provided, including a naturally dyed egg, scratch tools, and reference materials.
